Weimar Babe: Irene Ambrus (1904-1990)

Irene Ambrus ( April 28 1904 in Budapest , † July 22 1990 in London), born Irene Beater was a Hungarian singer and actress.

She had a voice training at the Conservatory of Budapest. It was followed by first appearances in the operetta theater in Pest. In 1925 she moved to Berlin as a theatre actress and cabaret artist. In 1928 she married Dr. Levy from the record company Lindström AG , which helped her singing career.

From 1927 to 1933 she produced over 60 recordings. The lyrics were often quite risque - her most successful titles included ‘Susie the saxophone blows’, ‘Henry frets because you are out’  and ‘Today we go to bed until tomorrow!’. She also acted in several films.

The seizure of power by the Nazis abruptly ended the career of Jewish artists in Germany. emigrated in 1933 to England and acted on the stage in the 1930’s. She died in a London nursing home in 1990.
